Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience - Miami

Hello everyone!  This week I had the chance to visit the wonderful Van Gogh art exhibition down in Miami! Van Gogh may be a name that holds a place in everyone's mind due to his popularity, but the exhibition moved me in ways that compelled me to write about it.   Within taking the first few steps into the exhibition, I was immersed into a melancholic, yet heartwarming world that gave me a clearer view of Gogh's creative genius. Surrounded by lights, sound, and moving images of his work projected across the walls, I learned so much about his life-the inspirations and the plights. I thought I knew a significant amount about Van Gogh, but the narrative boards hung on the walls taught me things I never realized, and truly helped me empathize with the late artist.    "I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people."

Final Task: Mother

Image
Our movie entitled Mother which falls under the thriller genre follows a young girl named Jane and her relationship with her mom. Jane's home life has become quite difficult. Her mother has tasked her with bringing other young people home, in order to kill them. It is clear that Jane is conflicted about following through, but still does because she does not want to disappoint her mother. The opening sequence demonstrates the dynamic between the two on a day that Jane brings a new victim home.

Our editing time

After we finished filming, it was time to edit. We were all assigned scenes from the storyboard to edit. Hannah sent us the scenes we all were made to edit. I was responsible to edit the most important scenes of the entire opening. I saved the videos and exported them into iMovie. I began to split and cut the footage. I slowed and sped up some clips. And finally finished the first draft of editing. All my scenes together added up to over a minute long, which identified one of our problems in this film-making process. A great mistake, we did not plan how long we wanted each scene. Thus, with all of our parts editing together, it would have gone well over the 2-minute time limit. An emergency team meeting was arranged the next day. There were suggestions for me to put out some scenes, and I did. Scenes that had dialogue and were about 20 seconds were changed to muted scenes of about 2 seconds. After a boatload of suggestions and editing the finest details to make it as short as possible

Another try at filming

Today, we had another filming session. The last session we had was about 2 weeks ago. Thus, I was a bit rusty when it came to preparations. To be honest, I had forgotten to look for my outfit before I was getting picked up. Judith had agreed to pick me up again. So, when I was looking for the outfit I wore at the previous filming session, I could not find the skirt I wore. Of course, I was not particularly fond of the skirt. But, I was lent it by Judith and needed to wear the same thing I wore last time, so I was certainly in a pickle. I managed to alleviate my circumstances by wearing one of my mom's skirts that looked just like the one I wore before. I was very lucky. If I did not discover that one of my mom's skirts looked like the original, we may have had to rerecord all the footage we had.  As I mentioned before, I was a bit rusty on my skills/preparations since we had not gathered to film in a long time. Thus, I had forgotten most of my lines and had to brush off my acti

The Final Day

Finally, today was our last day of filming. As Hannah crossed out the last scene in our storyboard, all of us began to cheer. We were so happy to be done filming. We began to look back out our work and reminiscing on how fun filming was-which wasn't fun enough to earn such praise. However, the reason it was not fun was due to the fact that we under pressure, with no room to make mistakes. The pressure we were all under made us all susceptible to arguments and vulnerabilities. While I was filming, I often felt that our director, Hannah, was a bit hot-headed. She would often get mad at the actresses for messing up their part. The words "we don't have time for this," often left her lips. Of course, I agreed with her sentiment, but I did not appreciate her timing when she said this to us. After all, she told us that when we mistakenly messed up a line or even tripped over our shoelaces. I often felt that I was being ridiculed for something that I could not control. This

Communications

Image
This week consisted of more communications amongst our team. We talked about how we wanted to edit the videos we took.  First, we talked about filters. On our editing programs, we are able to put filters on the videos we edit. We all agreed it would be optimal if we applied them to our footage. The questions of whether the filter should consist of warm or cold tones, and whether it should be applied to all of the scenes arose. We decided that-if we still want to add filters-that they would mostly be cool tones. As we researched, we found out that warm tones/colors in films usually help to give a comfortable and happy vibe. Whereas, cool colors/tones can mean a variety of things. Mostly, they can be associated with feelings of isolation, danger, etc. Thus, we decided that cool colors were what we wanted the filters to consist of. There are other mis-en-scene  aspects of our editing, such as the saturation and brightness of the footage that we have not discussed yet. But, I have already

Editing our current footage

Image
Since we all filmed together, it was time to edit the footage we had so far. We don't have all the footage for the entire project yet. Thus, we decided to edit the footage we already had in order to save time. We set the dates for filming the rest in April, near the due date. This is definitely a bit scary since we don't really know if we will be able to film at that time. We also may have to rush the editing because the due date is shortly after.  As of now, I can only use the application iMovie to edit the footage. iMovie is a free editing video editing software application for iOS devices. I use it on my iPhone. I've used it for all of the previous projects, and it has worked well. However, I currently don't know how I can download the royalty-free music onto my cellphone, and then import them into the video. But I can figure it out. We decided to use the website that I found for royalty-free music a few weeks ago. I really liked that website and am glad to hear tha
